to throw cold water on something

英語里有好些習(xí)慣用語都和"水"，就是water這個字有關(guān)系。有的用：hot water；還有的用：cold water or deep water。在英語里用這些詞匯組成的習(xí)慣用語就和水一樣普遍。但是，它們都有一個共同的特點，那就是它們一般都含有貶意。今天我們要向大家介紹兩個用water這個字組成的習(xí)慣用語。第一個是：in hot water. In hot water的意思并不是"在熱水中"。它的確切意思是指某人或某些人出境困難,遇到非常麻煩的問題了。舉個例子來說吧：

例句-1："Joe is really in hot water now -- his girlfriend just found out he's seeing another woman."

這句話的意思是："喬伊現(xiàn)在可是難辦了，因為他的女朋友最近發(fā)現(xiàn)他另外還有一個女朋友。"

我們再舉一個例子：

例句-2："That movie actor tried to cheat on his income tax, but he got caught and now he's in hot water with the government."

這是說："那個電影演員想在繳納所得稅的時候弄虛作假，可是給稅務(wù)局發(fā)現(xiàn)了?，F(xiàn)在，他可麻煩了。"

今天要講的另一個和water有關(guān)的習(xí)慣用語是： to throw cold water on something. To throw cold water on something和中文里說的"潑冷水"意思完全一樣。下面的例子是一個人在說他辦公室里發(fā)生的事：

例句-3："Everybody else in the office thought my idea was great, but the boss threw cold water on it."

他說："辦公室里所有的人都認為我的主意很好，就是我們的老板給我潑冷水。"我們再舉一個例子。這是一個兒子在說他的爸爸：

例句-4："I had planned on going to medical school but my dad threw cold water on this idea the other day when he told me he wasn't sure he had the money to pay my tuition for so long."

他說："我一直想上醫(yī)學(xué)院?？墒牵翘煳野职纸o我潑冷水，說他不一定有能力替我付那么多年的學(xué)費。"
